The College of St. Scholastica women’s hockey team bounced back from a tough weekend at Adrian College with a successful trip across the Minnesota-Wisconsin border, defeating St. Norbert College Saturday afternoon 4-1 after tying with them the previous night to go 1-0-1 on the weekend.

The first period of play on Friday night featured plenty of penalties, with the Saints capitalizing on their second power-play opportunity in the 16th minute as Abby Sawyer netted an unassisted goal to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead.

St. Norbert didn’t go away, however, as they managed to tie the game at 1-1 just five minutes into the second period. Each team managed to kill off a penalty later in the period, keeping the score tied heading into the third.

The third period didn’t see much action, as neither team managed to put one in the back of the net. Overtime would follow this pattern, with both teams going scoreless despite the Saints receiving another power-play chance. While the tie wasn’t necessarily a bad outcome, the Saints had a mindset of coming out of Wisconsin with some winning momentum. They found that the ensuing day, throttling St. Norbert 4-1 in the back half of the double header.

Emily Stegora stole the show Saturday afternoon, putting the Saints up 2-0 before St. Norbert even managed to get on the scoreboard themselves. Stegora’s first goal came a little over
halfway through the first period on a power play. Her second came in the second period, once again in power-play fashion. Assisting on both of her goals were Alexia Klaas and Mac Johnson. St. Norbert made it a bit closer two minutes after Stegora’s second goal, as their own Emily Bondrager managed to send one past the CSS goalie to make it a 2-1 score.

Not to be outdone, and proving she was indeed the best Emily on the ice, Stegora netted her third goal of the game with under four minutes remaining in the second period. To make the hat trick even sweeter, Stegora’s third goal was a shorthander to extend the Saints lead back up to two at 3-1.

Finally, in the third period, St. Norbert was able to shut down Stegora. However it was too little too late, as the Saints didn’t allow a goal in the final period and even padded another one on themselves as Brandi Malwitz netted an unassisted goal to push the score to where it would finalize; 4-1 CSS.

The successful weekend puts the women’s hockey team at 6-1-2 overall, while boasting a 5-1-2 conference record. The will take the ice again on Friday, December 8th, hosting the Hamline Pipers at 4 p.m. in Mars Lakeview Arena.

For fans who are interested in watching the red-hot Saints, this matchup against Hamline will be your last chance of the year to catch them in action as they will be taking some much needed rest over Christmas break before coming back to host St. Thomas University on Jan. 6.
